Why Christmas Day Is Celebrated

Christmas is celebrated to remember the birth of Jesus Christ, which Christians believe is God’s Son.

The name ‘Christmas’ comes from Christ’s Mass (or Jesus). A mass service (sometimes called communion or Eucharist) is that where Christians remember that Jesus died for us and then came back to life. The ‘Christ-Mass’ service was the only one that was permitted after sunset (and before sunrise the next day), so people were in the middle of the night! So we get a short, Christ-Mass name for Christmas.

Christmas is now celebrated by people around the world, even if they are Christians or not. This is a time when family and friends come together and they remember good things. People, and especially kids, like Christmas, because this is a time when you give and receive gifts!

“Gifts of time and love are surely the basic ingredients of a truly merry Christmas.”

Peg Bracken

“We are better throughout the year for having, in spirit, become a child again at Christmastime.”

Laura Ingalls Wilder

“He who has not Christmas in his heart will never find it under a tree.”

Johnny Mathis

“Every year we celebrate the holy season of Advent, O God. Every year we pray those beautiful prayers of longing and waiting, and sing those lovely songs of hope and promise.”

Karl Rahner

“God never gives someone a gift they are not capable of receiving. If he gives us the gift of Christmas, it is because we all have the ability to understand and receive it.”
